Web of Lies by Jennifer Estep
Curiosity is definitely going to get me dead one of these days. Probably real soon.
I’m Gin Blanco. You might know me as the Spider, the most feared assassin in the South. I’m retired now, but trouble still has a way of finding me. Like the other day when two punks tried to rob my popular barbecue joint, the Pork Pit. Then there was the barrage of gunfire on the restaurant. Only, for once, those kill shots weren’t aimed at me. They were meant for Violet Fox. Ever since I agreed to help Violet and her grandfather protect their property from an evil coal-mining tycoon. I’m beginning to wonder if I’m really retired.
So is Detective Donovan Caine. The only honest cop in Ashland is having a hard time reconciling his attraction to me with his Boy Scount mentality. And I can barely keep my hands off his sexy body. What can I say? I’m a Stone elemental — with a little Ice magic thrown in — but my heart isn’t made of solid rock. Luckily, Gin Blanco always gets her man — dead or alive.
The Boys of Birmingham by P. L. Ryan
This book spins the story of the FBI career of William Saucier, known as “the Grey Ghost,” “the Sauce,” and “the Bay City Strangler” in his identity as one of the Boys of Birmingham. That’s what the northern, Irish Catholic membership of the FBI office in Birmingham, Alabama was called during the 1960s. The book tells how P. L. Ryan, the daughter of Saucier, and her family had to weather the hot climate and bigoted hostilities of the area, including attacks by the Ku Klux Klan. But the Boys managed to “spook” the Klan back, as the book recalls many humorous stories about how their FBI work managed to disintegrate the local KKK. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover had created the Boys of Birmingham based on comments Dr. King made concerning how the FBI had no black agents, and that the southern FBI was “sympathetic” to racism. Hoover answered King’s complaint by sending northern federal agents down into Birmingham whenever they committed a minor infraction. Becoming one of the “Boys” was actually considered to be a form of punishment, sending an agent down into “the Pits of Hell.” But all the Boys eventually developed lifelong friendships as the result of this “punishment,” with their families becoming very close. The Boys also were ordered to investigate Dr. King during his stays in Birmingham, becoming his “shadows” and being involved in the infamous Hoover tapes of King’s “indiscretions.” New information about these is told in this book for the first time, as also new information is given concerning the assassination investigation. The book tells how Saucier, as the lead field agent in charge of the Birmingham investigation, and the other Boys locate the identity of James Earl Ray, King’s killer. And Saucier himself is the agent who discovers a way to directly locate Ray, which swiftly results in his arrest. Thrilling, gripping and hilarious at times, this book covers the exploits of Saucier and his fellow agents, including one man, the Dallas Duplicator, who’s heavily involved in President Kennedy’s assassination. He may have been the infamous “blond man” who picked up the fifth bullet in Dealey Plaza, site of the Kennedy murder and source of the gunfire. This agent was the same one who arrested Lee Harvey Oswald, Kennedy’s presumed killer, and this book may also bring some new information concerning that investigation to light.
Coffee with an Author: Wednesday Lee Friday – May 31, 2010 at 10:00am CST
Wednesday Lee Friday was born November 24th, 1970 in Royal Oak, Michigan. It was a Tuesday.
After deciding against being a ballerina, an ichthyologist, and a famous singer, she decided to become a novelist just before starting kindergarten.
Wednesday went to college in Olivet, Michigan where she majored in theatre and broadcasting for some reason. She wrote and produced radio dramas for WOCR-FM and directed occasional performances at the Oaks Theatre. Much to her parent’s dismay, she intended to investigate a career in technical theatre.
She began working in professional theatre in 1993. She enjoyed it immensely until her paychecks bounced, forcing her to find work that would actually pay the bills. Wednesday worked many varied jobs including fast-food manager, reptile wrangler, tarot reader, radio commentator, activist, cashier in a natural foods market, community organizer, video store manager, phone sex operator, violin sales professional, and concierge to name a few.
After the unexpected closing of her workplace in 2004, Wednesday signed up for the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) to write the novel she had been meaning to write all her life: A Stabbing for Sadie. After its completion the following year, Wednesday began the long search for a publisher. She amassed many, many rejection letters until she finally received a positive response from Kris Stamp of StoneGarden.net publishing. She has since won five consecutive NaNoWriMo’s and has retired undefeated from the grueling and electrifying process of month-long novel writing.
In 2005, Wednesday began work on her second novelThe Cat’s Apprentice, about a woman who believes her husband’s mischievous cat is trying to kill her. This novel’s completion was postponed by the untimely death of the real-life cat, Clarence. Eventually, this novel was picked up for publication by StoneGarden.net publishing as well.
Featured Author: Stuart Lutz – May 31, 2010 to June 7, 2010
Stuart Lutz has always been fascinated by the stories told by older people. Perhaps it started when he was a boy and heard his great-grandparents recount their immigrant voyage to America, their first airplane sighting, and the first time his great-grandmother could legally vote (even though she had been married four years). Also, when he was young, he was intrigued during a family trip to Charleston, South Carolina, when the tour guide pointed out the building that still housed some Confederate widows, even though the Civil War had been over for 125 years. He could not understand how that could be, until the guide explained that some young ladies married much older men who had fought in the Civil War.
Lutz’s interests in history and writing come together in The Last Leaf, an oral history book featuring the stories of almost forty survivors and eyewitnesses to historically important events. Lutz is the only person to have interviewed the last three Civil War widows (the last one died in 2008), but The Last Leaf also features the last American World War I soldier, the final living person to have flown with Amelia Earhart, the final pitcher to give up a home run to Babe Ruth in his historic 1927 season (when Ruth hit sixty home runs), the last suffragette, the final Medal of Honor winner for heroism on Pearl Harbor Day, the last person to have made design contributions to the ENIAC (the first electronic, programmable computer), the final Iwo Jima flag raiser, the last survivor of the sunken Lusitania, the final Harry Houdini stage hand, and the last employees of Thomas Edison and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Each chapter blends the narrative of the “Last Leaves” with historical background so readers can understand what occurred and the long-term importance of each event.
Lutz owns Stuart Lutz Historic Documents, Inc., a firm that sells rare letters and manuscripts (www.HistoryDocs.com). He has written for American Heritage and Civil War Times Illustrated, and appeared on National Public Radio. He has a B.A. in American History from Johns Hopkins.
Two Blocks and $10
aka Our adventures during Book Expo America in New York City.
We arrived in New York City on Monday and since Naomi was born in New York the city was nothing new to her. Renee and Monie on the other hand were acting like the typical tourist taking pictures every few feet. The best part of the visit is that every native New Yorker swears everything is just two blocks away and the taxi rides are just $10. Come to find out two blocks is about six blocks and $10 taxi rides are more like $20. But being the troopers they are Renee and Monie figured it out and had some really great adventures seeing the sights along with meeting wonderful new authors and scoring lots of books.
See our Facebook page for some of our pictures.
